City & Suzy are back!

I had everything I ever wanted—a wife, a kid, with two more on the way. I was living the American dream. After the babies were born, we hit a rough patch. I did everything to prove my love, to show Suzy that nothing was more important than her. After some work and a lot of time, we found our groove again. Just when life had evened out, a familiar enemy came back to haunt us. It wasn’t my past that followed us, but my brother’s. When the danger gets too close, I’ll do anything to defend my family. There’s nothing more important than the people I love, and I’ll protect what’s mine—even if it costs me my life.

Suzy glared at me. “What’s this we shit? I’m the one with two aliens inside of me, trying to claw their way out of my body. I’m the only one pushing them out of my tiny vagina. Not you. Not her. Me!” She waved her hands frantically in the air. “I’m the one doing everything while you sit there calm, sexy, and without your body splitting in two. I’m going to be the one tearing wide open as I push two humans and their giant Gallo heads out of my body.” She collapsed, gasping for air, and closed her eyes.

I bit my lip. Pregnant Suzy was unpredictable, but in-labor Suzy was just downright scary. “I know, sugar. You’re doing all the hard work. I’m just here to cheer you on and support you.”

Her nostrils flared and her eyes grew wide when she glanced up. “Support me? If you want to support me, you’ll never knock me up again. You want to cheer me on?” She rolled her eyes and made a noise low in her throat. “Stop fucking talking.”

I braced myself, waiting for her head to do a 360. I brought my mouth right next to her ear. “My sweet little wife, you beg for my cock every day. It takes two to tango, sweetheart. I didn’t put you in that bed.” I lowered my voice further, whispering, “Your sweet little cunt did.”

She closed her eyes again and moaned. “You’re just too damn good. I can’t keep my hands to myself. It’s still your fault, my dear husband.”

I couldn’t hold it in any longer. I burst into laughter. “Now, I fuck you too good?”

“Yes!” she screeched, pounding her fist on the crappy, plastic hospital bed. “If you weren’t so good at it, I wouldn’t be lying here right now.”

Just as I was about to reply, the nurse walked in. “I hear someone is ready to push.” Her voice was so chipper, kind of like my wife’s used to sound like before pregnancy. “Are we excited?” she asked, moving a tray of instruments next to the foot of the bed.

“I just want this over. I’m so freaking uncomfortable.”

“That makes two of us,” I muttered and nodded at the nurse with a fake smile on my face before leaning over and kissing Suzy’s forehead. “Ready, sugar?”

Dottie’s Star Rating: 3.75

Review by Dottie

This book was written in an interesting way. It was almost two distinct books; once the first part was complete, it segued into the second fairly seamlessly and continued on. Both of these parts of the book were written about the very first couple in this series, Joe (City) and Suzy, whom we “met” in Throttle Me. And they very well may be my favorite couple in this large, complex yet completely loving Italian/American family.

And a family they truly are! These people stick together through many hard and wonderful times throughout this series and made me honestly want to be one of them! The women all became their own pack within this testosterone-fueled bunch. The parents of this bunch are also very happily married after many years together and make it clear that just because they’re older, there is no reason to believe their attraction for one another and their time alone together is anything less than stellar (even though each of the adult kids act seriously scandalized when their parent’s love-life is mentioned)!

Of course, since this is the sixth book in the series, you probably already know this clan’s politics and relationships. I’m happy to report that none of that has changed. In this book, however, we find the Gallos have been busy multiplying through procreation and becoming even more of a tight, loving clan than they were before!

In this edition, we find Suzy pregnant with twins and about to deliver those little bundles of joy. We go through the ups and downs of the pregnancy as well as the delivery and the aftermath of the adjustment of twins to their little family…

“Suzy.” I squeezed her hand gently. “Look at me.” She turned toward me, slowly dragging her eyes to mine as I waited. “I don’t know what’s happening here, but you need to remember a few things, love.” “What?” Her voice was laced with attitude. “First of all, I love you more than life itself.” I leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “Second, you’re still as beautiful as the day I met you. Remember that day, sugar?” The corners of her mouth turned up, and I could almost see her replaying the moment in her head when I found her on the side of the road. “Yeah.” She blinked slowly before sighing. “When I look at you, I’ll always see that scared, beautiful creature in my headlights as I blew by. I knew the moment I say you that I had to have you. Never forget that you’re mine and always will be….

This part of the book was cool; it felt like a window into one of my favorite book- couples and almost checking “in” with them – seeing how they’re doing and what’s new with them. There were ups and downs, as there are with each and every couple, but overall, I found this part of the book very enjoyable and would give it 4 stars unto itself.

Then the book changed direction and this is where I wasn’t quite as thrilled. This clan seems to attract trouble like honey draws bees and when the Gallo family is threatened, they all close ranks and keep their priorities straight – and this is what this second half of this book entailed.

For me, however, I found this second part a bit frustrating. I understand the need to continue this series into the adventurous and risky situations that have underscored this series, but this part felt a bit unrealistic to me. The guys are on high alert for good reason, but the way they “took care of their women” kind of bugged me. These are very strong, intelligent, capable women. Having the men in a “huddle” and talking about protecting the women they love is not out of character for any of these guys, but they did it in a way that made me want to take Mama Gallo’s rolling pin and knock them all alongside the head. The women were treated like delicate little flowers by their men in this book, and after reading the other books in the series, it’s clear that “delicate” is not the adjective I would choose for any of these gals. They kick butt and treating them as anything but the proficient and intelligent women they are rankled me a bit. So, as a result, this part of the book would earn a 3.5-star rating with me. There is nothing inherently “wrong” with this part of the book. It simply felt a bit unnecessary to me.

However, I absolutely enjoyed “checking in” with not only Joe and Suzy, but also seeing how the whole gang has been doing. I feel an actual attachment to this family and fell in love with their clan all over again in this book.

So, would I recommend this book? Absolutely. This is a must-read for anybody who has read and enjoyed this series, especially those of us who are fans of Joe/City and Suzy as a couple! I remember reading about City pulling his bike up to Suzy’s car, broken down in the dark to rescue her like it was yesterday and smile with the memory. You can’t go wrong reading anything Ms. Bliss writes about this couple and that includes this book!

Review

Wow, what a road this has been; I can’t believe there have been seven Men of Inked series books! (With more novellas to come!) From the moment “City” found Suzy alongside the road with a broken down car (in Throttle Me, Book 1) I have read each and every one of these books as they’ve been published. This is the type of family you either wish you had or at the very least, hope your child marries into one day. They are warm, loving, and completely loyal to their family. They are good people and once they find “the one”, they become completely devoted to that person and their playboy (or in Izzy’s case, playgirl) status becomes null and void. They love with their whole hearts. Their parent’s, Sal and Maria are more in love with each other than the day they married and sometimes can hardly wait for the kids to leave Sunday dinner so they can have some “alone” time (sans clothes) and enjoy each other every bit as much as their grown kids enjoy their own significant others.

Anthony, the oldest, didn’t want a girlfriend. The thought of settling down with one woman struck him as crazy. He was happy for his siblings; they were happy with one woman (except his sister, who was happy with one man) but it just wasn’t for him. But one night, he saw Max. When he touched her hand, he felt a tingle he’d never felt before. She intrigued him. And when he asked to see her again, she turned him down cold.

“Why can’t a girl come to a bar and have a drink in peace without being hounded?” I took another sip, thinking about my response as I studied her. Before I could reply, she grabbed her martini and placed the glass to her lips. Fuck, I wished I were the glass. I wanted to taste her more than I wanted to Grand Marnier that lingered on my tongue. “First, if you want to have a drink in peace, you need to go to Applebee’s. You don’t come to the Ritz for a nightcap. Also, you don’t have your tits hanging out if you don’t want the attention of a man. You can’t look like that” – I motioned toward her body – “and expect not to be hit on.” She squared her shoulders as she set her drink back on the bar. If looks could kill, I’d be dead. “Just because I have on a T-shirt doesn’t mean I want to fuck. I live nearby and there isn’t an Applebee’s for miles. This is within walking distance and it’s where I want to drink. I don’t know if you’re clueless or just don’t give a shit, but when someone turns their back on you and refuses to answer your questions, it means they don’t want to be bothered.” She reached for her drink and held my eyes. “You need to get the fuck over yourself.” Oh my God, I think I’m in love. Well, not really. But fuck, she had my full attention.

But all is not as it seems. Max, she’s an independent woman. She’s been raised by a strong mother and until his death, a strong father. She’s got a brother she adores, Denzel, and a couple of girlfriends she’s tight with. What she doesn’t want is to get serious with any man. And she felt that tingle too; all the more reason to turn him down,

Max finds herself very attracted to Anthony. She has her reasons for not wanting to get close to anybody; but Anthony, he doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of “get lost” and makes it his business to get to know her. He stops short of stalking her, but he wants a chance with this evasive beauty.

Once he finally catches up to her again, her girlfriends seem to take his side and encourage her to go out with this fine example of a man. They’re out dancing and once Max is in his arms on the dance floor, their chemistry is hard to deny. She wants him every bit as much as he wants her; and when he walks her home, chemistry takes over…right up until that moment where she kicks him out and tells him…

“I think you should go,” she said as I rolled over and looked at her. I didn’t know what to say as the words soaked in. I’d never been thrown out or excused by a woman. Never. “What?” I asked.

So here’s Anthony. Used to being God’s gift to woman who has met a woman whom he can’t fathom why she seemingly wants nothing to do with him. The one woman who makes his skin tingle and makes him want more doesn’t want to give him the time of day. He does a lot of soul searching and talks to his family but is still confused but knows he is craving Max. He needs to spend time with her like he needs to breathe.

Max has issues of her own, but she long ago gave up on the dream of a man and a family of her own. As tempting as Anthony is, she makes herself stay away from him.

This book is about a man who finds meeting the right woman means he must change; he must make room in his life for someone special. And Max, she finds she must give up her fears and allow love into her life and into her heart. It’s a good story and when everything is revealed, connections are discovered and families’ merge and the Gallos find themselves blessed and happy.

This is the final “book” from this series but as Chelle Bliss states, she might never really be done with the Gallos. She will be writing novellas and other books where the characters are connected to the Gallos because she isn’t ready to say goodbye to them; and honestly, neither am I.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, this book wraps up some details left hanging in some previous books, for instance, Suzy and City have their baby! Before becoming an uncle, Anthony felt this about babies…

There hadn’t been a baby in the family in well over twenty years. The only thing I could think of was all the crying. They’re cute, but the shit themselves continuously, they always cry for food, or they were asleep. Babies didn’t have many uses. You couldn’t play with them. You just had to hold them and wait until the next time they cried for attention.

Then he meets his newborn niece…

I bounced her lightly and touched her hand with my finger. Her tiny digits clamped down on my finger with force. “Isn’t she beautiful?” Joe asked as he stood next to Suzy on the other side of the bed. “She is,” I agreed, and looked at Ma. “Look how perfect she is,” I stared down at Gigi and rubbed the back of her hand in the same motion I used when I wanted to reassure Max. “It’s amazing.” “Look at you getting all mushy, Anthony,” Suzy said, but I didn’t bother to look at her. “She’s a Gallo. I have a right to be mushy,…Night, little Gigi,” I whispered against her face. She let out a small cry and turned her mouth toward me. Cool baby spit landed on my nose. I was done for, and there was no turning back. She’d given me her first kiss, and it would be forever seared in my brain. “Are you tearing up?” Max asked as she started to hand Gigi back to Suzy. “No!” I shot back as I tried to blink away the mist that had formed in my eyes. “It’s the air in here. It’s killing my contacts.” “Um, I didn’t know you wore contacts,” Max said…”He doesn’t,” Joe piped in…

I felt this was a very nice ending to this series. I think I rated the earlier books higher because there was some action involved that resolved as the books went on; the last two felt like the brother’s got their own books because of the series but the major story-line with the undercover agents and motorcycle “clubs” and all had resolved. This doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it; I very definitely did. I truly like the Gallos and if you’ve been a fan of the series, I would absolutely recommend you read this last book in the official series. Anthony is a pretty fun character as is Max. I really enjoyed this series very much and hope you do too.

Synopsis
I lost track of my life.
Spiraling down the rabbit hole, I lost myself and became one of them. Living undercover within the MC, the days bled together as I became absorbed in a life of excess and violence.

Becoming consumed was easy.
Was I Thomas Gallo, good guy and respected cop or Blue, Sergeant-at-Arms of the Sun Devils MC?
Before, I could answer with certainty. But now, there’s a darkness that has settled deep in my soul, fusing with my heart and altering my reality forever.
The road I’ve traveled has been paved with danger, death, and deception.
Roxanne grew up as part of the MC, a victim of her birth. Her life has been treacherous, setting her on a course of torment and destruction.
When our worlds collide, secrets are revealed. Trying to save us from damnation, I fight for redemption and the woman I love.

Review
I want to say first off, it completely pains me to only give this book 3.5 stars, because I absolutely love this series. I have followed each and every one of these books and read them very shortly after their release. I love the Gallo family (albeit a fictional family but pfff). The author states in the closing notes that this book has been the most difficult to write of the series but that it’s a deeper story and she’s right, it’s deeper by far than the others.
This book is necessary to this series because it fills in the timeline with the details of events already known to the reader in Izzy’s book(s) as well as it tells Thomas’s story (which I will tell you I have really been wanting to hear from the first book on)…What I didn’t care for is two-fold. One, when we start this book, Thomas has already met and is in a relationship with Roxy. This is difficult because the beginning of a relationship of the main characters of a book just seems important to me. To watch it grow, to develop. But as we join Thomas and Roxy, they are already involved. They already love each other. Yes, they have to fight for their relationship and in that regard it’s well done. But there was no watching the bloom of new love develops and I missed that.
And secondly: Roxy/Angel. She’s very sweet. If Thomas loves her, I’m with the Gallo family – she’s good enough for me. But who is she? We learn basics about her background. We know she loves Thomas and will do what she needs to do to protect him. We know her childhood wasn’t the best growing up attached to an outlaw MC. We hear her voice, almost every other chapter in this book are told by both points of view. But since we didn’t see this relationship start and develop, I didn’t really feel I knew her all that well. I will say I liked her. She made a couple of decisions I disagreed with, and that’s okay too. She questioned something Thomas said that I would have flipped my lid about and yet she never calls him on it and that struck me as a bit odd. But even though Thomas has been absent throughout most of this series (he’s an undercover DEA agent), I still feel like we’d gotten to know him and I like him. And like I said, if Roxy/Angel is good enough for him, she’s good enough for me. But I wish I knew her better.
This is not saying this is a bad book. It’s good. It’s just not my favorite of this series. I will say absolutely that I liked it and will no doubt reread it along with the rest of the series at some point; possibly before Anthony’s book, due sometime this spring (2015). If you are a fan of this series, you should absolutely read it. If you haven’t read this series yet, I ask you, why not? The Gallo family is a fun, very loving, very loyal to one-another Italian-American family. Most of the adult “kids” run a tattoo parlor with each other and are very close. They’ve been worried about Thomas and he’s been present in each book as one they all love and miss and worry about. And as I said, he definitely had a role in Izzy’s story so we really got to know him then; and he’s awesome. He’s deep. He’s willing to do what he needs to do to protect his family and to do the right thing. I love Thomas.
When he finally comes home and rejoins the family fold, he brings Roxy/Angel with him. The Gallos can be a rather loud, intimidating bunch of hugging, affectionate people and this is new to her…
Excerpt
As we walked out the front door, I said, “Thank you.” She stopped, pulling me back toward her with her hand. “For what?” she asked, tilting her head and staring at me. I looked beautiful, dark eyes. “For coming today. I know they’re a lot to take in.” “I love them, Thomas. After we talked on the stairs, I let your words sink in. I needed to forget the past and look to the future. They made me feel welcome, and that’s something I’ve never experienced. For the first time in my life, I felt like part of a family.” She smiled as pools of water collected in the corners of her eyes.
This book is actually pretty sweet when you get beyond the nasty business with the MC and the grittiness of it (this is not one of those MCs we readers would find someone attractive within, these guys are just mean). The love story is like a fairy tale in a lot of ways (the prince rescues the princess from her mean and cruel “family” and takes her home to his castle and they live happily ever after…) and it fits within this family in such a way that it works. My only complaint is not seeing this blooming relationship start and watch them fall in love. Other than that, I enjoyed it and am anxiously looking forward to Anthony’s book coming soon.

The Gallos:  The Beginning is a very short (about 40 pages plus a preview for book one, Throttle Me) book that is in all actuality a gift from Chelle Bliss that was released a couple of days after Christmas.  Although some retailers took longer than others to reduce the price, it was intended to be a free book for her fans.  Although nothing really happens that would move the story-lines of the other books along, it was absolutely delightful getting to know the parents of this brood a bit better.
Ms. Bliss stated this book would be almost like walking in on your parents and being scarred for life.  I concur.  Who knew Mama and Papa Gallo could be so hot for each other??  These people, who have been together for years, have it bad for each other; and that was way too cool to see.
“I think they want us to go,” Mike chimed in, pushing back from the table with his plate in his hand. “Maybe we should take a hint.” “What hint?” Anthony asked, scratching his forehead. “They’ve been giving each other goo-goo eyes for hours now.” “Seriously?” Izzy asked with her mouth gaping open, looking between Maria and me…”Really?” Izzy asked again, shaking her head.  “Even after thirty years, you two want us to go so you can have…sex?”  She made a face when she said sex, her body physically heaving forward…”Aren’t you two too old to have sex?” she asked as she too stood, pushing away from the table.  “No.  Don’t answer that.  I don’t want to know.  There are some things your children don’t want to know.”… The kids left in a hurry.  I assumed the thought of me having sex with their mother drove them out fast.  “They’re finally gone,” I said, pulling her hand to my lips.  “Real smooth, Sal.”  She laughed, pulling her hand from my grip as she stood. “Come here, love.”  I held out my hand to her, pushing back from the table a few inches. Sliding her hand in mine, I pulled her into my lap, wrapping my arm around her and gripping her thigh with my other hand.  Running my nose along her jaw, I could still smell the cake on her lips.  I sank my teeth into her neck, stroking her skin with my tongue as she whimpered.
In all, it felt very fun to see where it began.  The timing of this book takes place prior to book one, Throttle Me.  This would be a great introduction to this family as long as you understand that this is in no way indicative of the following books within the Men of Inked series; those are real books.  They have drama, conflict, love, and a very tight-knit family and are pretty good thus far.
I really enjoyed this quick read.  It felt like exactly what it was, a gift.  I truly think I might need a series reread soon!
