Samuel Clearwater, A.K.A Preppy, likes bowties, pancakes, suspenders, good friends, good times, good drugs, and a good f*ck.

He’s worked his way out from beneath a hellish childhood and is living the life he’s always imagined for himself. When he meets a girl, a junkie on the verge of ending it all, he’s torn between his feelings for her and the crippling fear that she could be the one to end the life he loves.

Andrea ‘Dre’ Capulet is strung out and tired.

Tired of living for her next fix. Tired of doing things that make her stomach turn. Tired of looking in the mirror at the reflection of the person she’s become. Just when she decides to end it all, she meets a man who will change the course of both their lives forever.

And their deaths.

For most people, death is the end of their story.

For Preppy and Dre, death was only the beginning.

This is the fifth book in the King Series and it’s meant to be read after Soulless.

The Evil Ginger has done it again. Only this time, she’s not so evil. Well, as reformed as a twisted soul can be. In The Life and Death of Samuel Clearwater, she still gives us a wickedly dark story but she also gives us our beloved Preppy back and douses his story with deep emotion. This is a book you don’t want to miss.

Preppy is the 5th book in a series and you must read the four books before it (King, Tyrant, Lawless, & Soulless). Each one of these books is EPIC. The journey is one you will never forget. T.M. Frazier will have your jaw dropping, tears leaking, and hormones raging.

I wasn’t 100 percent sure what to expect going into Preppy. He’s a dark character with a wild sense of humor and T.M. Frazier likes to pull the rug from underneath us. All I knew was it was something I was salivating to get my hands on. So, I went in not expecting anything (Plot wise). I had no idea where the story would go. I couldn’t have predicted anything about how T.M. would tackle such a complicated character or where she would take us but it couldn’t have been more perfect. She switches up her style a bit with this book and shows us more of her range, playing more with the emotions of the story. And doing it so damn well.

Preppy is obviously a character that has been through a lot. Not only do we start to see the chain of events from the last couple of books revealed from his perspective but we learn more about his past and how he became the man he is today. You will feel the darkness from his world like his burdens are your own.

Andrea ‘Dre’ Capulet couldn’t be more perfect to round out this story. She’s fighting demons of her own. She’s feisty yet broken. Strong yet vulnerable. She’s Preppy’s perfect match. Dre may even give Ray a run for her money as my favorite of T.M.’s leading ladies. There is a twist in the timing of when these two met that I didn’t see coming and it adds more intrigue into the entire series.

I love this story. I love these characters. T.M. Frazier transports us to a dark and gritty world. The whole crew of characters have bonds that are unshakable. We see more of Bear and Preppy interacting one on one in the story and I absolutely loved that part too. You won’t be disappointed in this latest edition to the series. It deserves every bit of praise and hype that I’m sure it will get. I can’t wait to see where the rest of Preppy’s story goes. I’ll be waiting on pins and needles.

Review by Dottie

First and foremost – DO NOT READ THIS BOOK UNTIL YOU’VE READ THE PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THIS SERIES! This is about as far from a stand-alone as it gets! (Plus, there is a spoiler further down within this review as it is about a sequel of the previous books, so reader beware!)

That being said…if you haven’t discovered this series yet – where have you been? This series is gritty and dark, yet funny in a quirky sort of way, sexy, and intriguing beyond words. And yet, I have a certain love for this series that causes me to practically salivate every time I know a new one is about to be released. As far as I’m concerned, this is a not-to-be-missed series that, as long as you can deal with gritty, I cannot recommend it enough!

In Preppy, we become more familiar with his character (Preppy’s) as well as meeting a new character, Dre (short for Andrea). This book also switches back and forth between the present time and three years prior (to what we, who have been reading this series) know to be happening. It’s told in alternating points of view, which I have to tell you, was fascinating. Getting “into” Preppy’s head was something I have looked forward to doing for quite a while and this book did not let me down!

Have you ever wondered what it is with Preppy and pancakes? The answer is within this book. And have you pondered about why he dresses like he does, complete with a bow-tie? Yep, the insight is within these pages as well! I have always loved Preppy despite his sometimes “interesting” philosophies of life and his less-than stellar and sometimes not quite legal deeds. I have always understood he’s a bit of a tortured soul (this is putting it lightly) but he’s also a guy I would be delighted to befriend in my life if he wasn’t a fictional character. He’s so unique; you never know what he’s going to do and say next and I love that! He’s about as far from boring as a character can get! And despite the fact that he operates just a tad bit outside “the law,” (and yes, this is me being sarcastic), he’s got a tremendously good heart. He’s about as loyal as a person can get. He tries to do what he perceives to be the right thing as long as it fits within the parameters he’s built his life within.

And then there’s the new character, Dre. She’s a tortured soul too yet she’s so feisty that sometimes she made me laugh and sometimes I would feel myself holding back tears at what she’s endured. She’s written is such a way that it makes it easy to understand why she’s done the things she’s done (well, eventually as you continue reading this book). And when Preppy first really “sees” her, he reacts in a typical Preppy fashion…

The night has taken a turn for the worse when I showed up to Mirna’s house on the tail end of being robbed of my fucking plants. However, I was now straddling a naked chick on top of the water tower, which one of my favorite places in Logan’s Beach. Shit was looking up. Although, when I followed her up to the tower I hadn’t known she was planning to defile my sacred space by tossing her boney body off of it…I watched as she stood stark naked, with her face tilted toward the sky, and her arms out, like she was the king of the world on the front of the motherfuckcing Titanic. She was fascinating. The bitch was in rough shape. Bruises and dried blood patched all over her skin made her look like a puzzle missing some pieces…If I’d been a nanosecond later in making a run for her I’d be calling for clean up instead of sitting on top of her, caging her in with my thighs. Fuck, if she hadn’t been such a tiny waif of a thing, she probably would’ve pulled me over with her. “Why did you save me?” she suddenly asked, pausing her adorable struggling which was getting her nowhere fast. “Awe, that’s cute,” I said, peering down into her doll-like eyes that were so dark, they were almost black…”What’s cute?” she asked on a strained exhale. “That you think you’ve been saved.” “Well, I’m not dead,” she argued. “Yet,” I shrugged. “It’s hard to get answers from a flattened corpse. Trust me I’ve tried.” She growled and tried to free herself from my grasp, and that’s when I got a better look at the inside of her arms. Suddenly, it sunk in that this chick wasn’t just covered in bruises, those were pock marks. She wasn’t just some skinny bitch. She was a junkie. Bruised. Broken. Vulnerable. She was shaking like a fucking leaf, and with every tremble my dick grew harder until it was begging to be free from of its khaki confines. She gasped, when she felt me hard against her leg. “What. . .why?” I raised my eyebrows. “Really? Why? My cock knows I’m on top of a naked chick. It’s simple biology….

Ahh, such typical Preppy! This guy is a bit on the crass side, obviously, but there is something about this character that you’ve just gotta love. I’ve honestly loved this character since I first “met” him in King, and I’ve only become more intrigued and have enjoyed him more as time goes on.

As we know from the end of Soulless, Preppy has been missing and assumed dead for quite some time. We’ve heard “Ghost Preppy” voicing off about things as time as gone by that sound just like him in thought and style. And then, at the very end of Soulless, were those words that brought both shock as well as delight to all of us who were completely crushed when Preppy “died.” He’s a one of a kind character and I am delighted that reports of his demise were premature!

And then there’s the character of Dre. In typical T.m. Frazier style, this is also a multi-faceted character that was easy to care about and relate to on a very human level. She’s not “just a junkie.” She’s complex. She’s likable. She finds herself loving Preppy despite his character flaws. And honestly, I myself really liked her a lot. She had an interesting way to look at the world. When her grandmother gave her some of her beautiful vintage clothing…

“Where did you get all this?” I asked, clutching the most perfect high-heeled, black, platform pump to my chest…”We are going to get you all fixed up proper, and then we are going to go outside and meditate in the fresh air.”…The green and white sundress Mirna [her grandmother] had picked out for me had thick straps that snapped around my neck, and a squared neckline that pushed up my breasts and gave them a fuller, more rounded look…And of course, I was wearing THE platform pumps with bows. “Who says love at first doesn’t exist?” I whispered as I turned my foot from side to side, to better admire my new lovers…Later that day, Mirna gave me my first lesson in meditation. I was sans shoes in the grass, but every so often I’d open one eye and check to make sure they were still on the deck where I’d placed them, lovingly, in the shade….

So basically, Dre was almost a contradiction within herself. She’s a girly-girl who can get into the mud and get scrappy when she needs to. Fun girl! And when these two found their way to each other, it was a bit along the epic side!

Then there’s the fact that this is first of three books about these characters; you have to know it ends in a way that is completely unexpected – and it does! But then that’s part of the fun of reading a T.m. Frazier book to begin with. She keeps us guessing in the very best kind of way!

(Note: Although this is listed as the third in this series, it doesn’t take into account the book numbered 2.5 in this series. So actually, this is the fourth book in the Time series.)

When I read the very first book in this series a few years ago, I was wowed to the point of writing to the author to tell her that her book had completely touched my heart – actually, more like my soul. So in full disclosure, I will also tell you that I have developed a friendship over the last few years with this author. But, although she is dear to me, I would remind you that the reason I reached out to her that first time was because her first book spoke to me so strongly that I loved it enough to write to her! So, yes, I’m her friend. But I’m also a fan of her work.

In Shattered, we again meet up with a “gang” of characters that we first met in that very first book, Tethered Through Time. This is where I will tell you that if you haven’t yet read the other books in this series, I would recommend you stop right here and then go back and read my reviews for the other three books in this series and start at the beginning. I feel like if I picked this book up without reading the others first, I would be lost. I wouldn’t understand the dynamics between the characters as well as their histories, both together as a group as well as individual couples.

Throughout this series, there has also been another story that has developed involving crime and intrigue and it has added a delightful (well, except of course because it’s about crime, maybe delightful isn’t the best description) dimension to this series. These are not just romance books (although, of course, that is first and foremost). These books also have some action and some situations that can leave you wondering where it will go from there – and with that come twists and turns and things you do not expect. I would, however, also recommend you read them all within a reasonably short time of one another – I had forgotten a few details and wished I had had the time to go back and reread the first books to “reconnect” with the characters (although some I will remember forever)!

In this book, we experience the relationship between Josh and Julia (of whom we’ve met in the previous books within this series). Here’s the one thing I wasn’t crazy about – when this book starts, this couple already knows each other and although they had considered it casual at first, they were already “involved” as this book began. I honestly wish that I had experienced that “first time” within their own book (which is one of the biggest reasons I would recommend you read this series in order) right along with them. I truly enjoyed this couple but without the true “start” of their relationship, I felt a bit like something was missing. When they got together, albeit casually, it was in another couple’s “book” so we really didn’t learn about all those details we all know and love about the couple first meeting and being attracted to one another, etc. You know, that first spark that it’s fun to experience right along with the characters!

However, this is not to say that I didn’t appreciate and enjoy their dynamic, I did. But this is one of the biggest reasons this is not the book to start your adventure into this group of friends and family that I, for one, would really love to experience within my own life. They are a tight-knit group and I absolutely love how they all take care of each other as a group and individually.

I did, however, feel that when things began to change in their feelings for one another, we were front and center (and actually, isn’t that the most important part)?….

…The feelings I have for him run so deep and for the first time in my life, I know I’m in love….

Julia has a complex history, too bad she doesn’t remember it! She only remembers her life from around the time she was in college to the present. It’s a mystery, and her guy Josh, well he works for the FBI. What FBI hunk would you know who wouldn’t be intrigued with a beautiful woman with a mysterious past?

And Josh, he has demons that keep him up at night. He’s recently “come in” from being under deep cover and has seen things he wishes he could forget. Having Julia in his life becomes something that makes him feel like he’s healing. He sleeps better when she’s there. He feels better when he’s with her. She’s his balm, and a sexy one at that. And when she decides that maybe he’d be better off without her and her questionable past, he’s not so easily swayed…

“We can stay at your place or mine. Location doesn’t matter. Remember, I’m not easily pushed away.” “Okay,” she answers quietly…My body aches to be near her, but I’m afraid I might spook her by coming on too strong. She said take thing slow and wanting a kiss – I hope I have it in me to deliver just that. Her tongue darts out and moves slowly across her bottom lip before finding my eyes again…”I’m afraid to kiss you, Julia. You mean that much to me. I’m afraid I won’t be able to stop.” When my lips finally rest against hers, the deal my body made with my brain flies out the window. I haven’t touched her in more than a week now and now all I want is to devour every inch of her….

This is a case of two friends, who are more than friends in a casual way, becoming a whole lot more than that. It is a book about their hearts healing and finding each other and realizing they are perfect together, despite their histories and the chaos swirling around them.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned today it’s how much you and our family mean to me [this group of people have literally and figuratively become an extended family]. I love you too, Josh. It seems every time my world comes crashing down, you are there to pick me back up again.” “Always, love. Always.” We manage to get lost in a hug that feels more like the blending of two hearts. Like most couples in love our hugs always lead to more. Kissing Josh is always amazing but tonight there’s a notable difference. The connection is nearly electric and I couldn’t pull away even if I wanted to. What isn’t being said with words is communicated through heartbeats. And with each beat I imagine my heart is being pieced together again….

And this book wraps up (I think) the crime ring that has been ongoing throughout this series which has been intriguing and yet, a bit on the nasty side as all good crime stories are known to be. It doesn’t take front and center in the story, but it definitely influences the direction of the storyline.

As always, there is a bit of a lean toward some super-natural happenings in this one too and it completely works. Nothing over the top, just right!

I have to tell you I truly wish I knew these fictional people and was part of their “family” too. They’re an amazing group of characters and they feel like old friends. I look forward to these books as they’re released and feel like I’ve just spent time with some dear friends as I’ve read this book! I seriously encourage you all to read this series, beginning with the first book and following through this one if you feel like you want to be a part of this group of remarkable, talented characters.

Shattered by Time by B.A. Dillon is a sweet crime romance. It is part of a series but this is Julia and Josh’s first story of their own. Julia is a bit emotionally closed off but Josh won’t let that detour him. He’s a man on a mission, to love and protect Julia. Not a bad deal for Julia. Josh is an FBI agent with a signature smirk and Julia is a sarcastic fireball ready to keep him on his toes. My favorite kind of gal.

There are a lot of elements of intrigue in this story: a dash of paranormal, a hefty helping of crime plot, and heaping dose of loving bonds (both between our hopefuls and their makeshift family). B.A. Dillon creates realistic bonds that you wish were your own. These characters care about each other deeply. It’s a story that will keep you guessing because of complicated twists that work well for the crime elements. It’s edgy and different in ways that strengthens the story. B.A. is an author to watch. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

B.A. Dillon is the author of the Time Series. Tethered Through Time was Dillon’s debut novel. A Vision in Time and It’s About Time followed in 2015. Shattered by Time is scheduled for release in fall 2016. Dillon also writes the column, “Turn the Page,” for the monthly magazine 85 South, Out and About, published in the Atlanta area. She is a devoted wife and mother of two grown children, and a dedicated middle school teacher. She loves music, words, books, and martinis!

Synopsis:

I, Makayla Alexander, am on a mission to reinvent myself. So when a super hot guy boards the plane and flashes his rock hard abs, I pay attention. When he sits next to me and offers me his nuts, I can’t resist. But when I choke on them and he tells me I need to work on my gag reflex, I realize I might be in over my head.

Before I know it we’re in the lavatory and attempting to join the Mile High Club. Let me just say this…anyone who tells you it’s easy to get it on at 37,000 feet isn’t telling you the truth. After the flight attendant busts us for getting frisky in the air, the only thing that can ease my total and complete mortification is the simple fact that I am never going to see him again.

Hours later, I can’t help but wonder if fate will ever allow me to become a new version of myself.

Because Fate, she’s a fickle bitch.

Case in point…my seatmate is my new next-door neighbor.

Even with the whole fate thing we have going on, we are so not meant to be together. He’s all cool and sexy in that make love not war kind of way. Guys like him are dangerous. With that bring-you-to-your-knees body, that handsome-as-hell face, and that dirty, dirty mouth, I guarantee one glance from him wets every girl’s bikini bottoms.

And then there’s me…the quirky girl looking to find herself in California. All I want to do is learn to let loose. Say words like peace and groovy. Bury my toes in the sand. Who knows, maybe even have sex on the beach.

Unable to get him out of my head, I entertain the thought of being more than just friends. I know the idea is absurd. And yet, I go with it. You see Camden Waters gets me. Really gets me. Like no other guy has before.

On this 7-mile stretch of paradise, I decide to keep things simple and just have fun…that is until fate decides to screw with me, again.

Can two people hell-bent on finding themselves realize the search should have ended the day they met? Find out in No Pants Required—a sexy, funny, romantic stand-alone, that will have you hurrying to grab your bathing suit and rushing to the beach to check out every lifeguard on duty.

Dottie’s Star Rating: 4 Stars

Review by Dottie

I’m going to begin with saying I am already a fan of Kim Karr – I have read quite a few of her books and have enjoyed each of them thus far – and No Pants Required is an adorable addition to her catalogue!

As I read this, her latest book, I found myself chuckling out loud several times and found a lot of it to be light-hearted and a very nice break from some fairly serious and heavy books I have read lately.

Makayla is a young woman who needs a change. She has a degree in fashion from the Institute of Technology where she became best friends with her college roommate, Maggie. When Makayla realizes her life in New York just isn’t going the way she’d hoped (love-life, career, etc.) and she decides she needs a change, her friend Maggie invites her to move to Southern California to live with her and find that change. But before Makayla gets onto the airplane to fly to California, Maggie gives her a to-do list meant to get Makayla out of her “uptight” ways…

…”And how exactly am I going to do that?” I ask with another hiccup. Damn soda. “Glad you asked. You’re going to do that by completing every item on the list.” “The list?” My ears perk up. “Yes, the list.” I can hear the smile in her voice. She had me at the word list, and she knows it. “I’m emailing it to you now. Look it over and be ready to talk about it when you arrive. See you soon. ‘Bye.” “Maggie, wait.” It’s too late. She’s gone. Moments later I receive a noticification that I have mail…Clicking on the attachment, a nicely numbered list populates my screen. How well she knows me. I read it. Sinking into the seat in embarrassment, I die a little more with each passing item. The list comes complete with notes. I scoff as I read them and laugh a little, too…maybe with a whole lot of wine, I can accomplish most of the items…Ten things to accomplish in a month. How hard can it be?…

As you have probably surmised from the synopsis, one of those items is to join the Mile High Club – how unfortunate that the one guy she’s hopelessly attracted to and even makes hooking up with him seem like a good idea (since, after all, she thinks she’ll never see him again) happens to be her new next-door neighbor. And when the attempt goes hopelessly south, and Makayla is hopelessly embarrassed, her new “life” becomes far more complicated than she had hoped for.

And Cam (this sexy new neighbor) finds himself in the surprising position of finding it impossible to forget his seat-mate from the flight and when he realizes she’s his new neighbor, he recognizes that maybe he’s got a second chance to get to know this lovely lady – but she’s not so sure that sounds like a good idea and takes off running down the beach to avoid having that very conversation with him…

“Makayla, stop.” He’s catching up with me…A hand grabs for me. Furious that he caught up with me, maybe more so that he struck a nerve I wanted to keep buried, I lose my footing and stumble. Before I can catch myself, I’m on the ground. Facedown in the sand, and he’s on top of me. Again. “Get off me!” I scream, pressing my arms into the sand and trying to push myself up. Gently, he grabs my wrists, and even more gently, he whispers in my ear, “I’m not going to hurt you; I just want to talk. That’s all.” The scent of him, no longer lavender, but so extremely man, is intoxicating. Yet it’s the feel of him on top of me that makes me freeze. My muscles clench and my body goes stiff. Strange thing is, it’s not fear doing this to me, it’s arousal. For heaven’s sake, my body needs to get a life….

The banter between these two was often fun, often sexy, and yet, also sometimes poignant and tender. Their relationship bounced around and was hard to define in conventional terms, but I found myself enjoying their interactions and hoped they’d find their way, to deciding what to do with the intense attraction between them.

There was an interesting twist in this book in that there is a book within this book (and it becomes a book these two end up reading together). I had mixed feelings about it; there were times it felt distracting. I was curious about how that book would turns out, but the characters were hard to invest in because it was the book they were reading instead of me (if that even makes any sense). I thought the concept was good but I think I would have preferred less actual reading of it and more mentioning that they were indeed reading an often sexy and erotic novel between the two of them.

Beyond that issue, I thought this book was fun and I truly enjoyed both of the characters within it. I didn’t, however, always understand some of the decisions the characters made and at times found myself frustrated by what seemed (to me) an obvious misunderstanding that neither of them handled in a way that I had hoped they would. I wanted to tell them to c-o-m-m-u-n-i-c-a-t-e with one another and although this frustrated me, it is in all actuality the “cornerstone” of this genre of book after all! I mean really, if these couples all sailed along with no misunderstandings and issues, these books would be all kinds of boring!

I absolutely enjoyed this one though, don’t get me wrong. Kim Karr is an amazing story-teller and weaves a story that is always entertaining and sometimes thought-provoking. I can hardly wait to see what she writes next!

My Dirty Detour

An Alpha Male Mafia Comedy Romance

By Grace Risata

Genres: Romantic Comedy / Mafia

Reviewed by Dottie

Synopsis

A dominant leader flees the mafia, looking for a fresh start in a small town. He put all his effort into starting a business and resigned himself to a life without love.
A neurotic germaphobe lives vicariously through the books she reads, preferring to play it safe in real life and hide behind her sarcastic remarks.
“I am NOT that neurotic! I just have germ issues and I tend to over-analyze things. Sure, I second guess myself all the time and have a tendency to freak out over the small stuff. I’ll admit that I do ask a lot of “what if…?” questions. Fine. I’m neurotic.”
One fateful day, the simple act of taking a wrong turn leads Violet right into Rocky’s life and completely turns it upside down. Accustomed to his orders being obeyed immediately and without question, Rocky doesn’t appreciate Violet challenging his authority at every opportunity.
“I don’t like being told what to do. Especially when some arrogant tough guy thinks he can boss me around. I might have argued with him just to keep him close. He smelled like heaven. Although with a body like his, I knew he was no angel.
Violet charmed her way into his heart with her quick wit and stubbornness, causing Rocky to fail at his many attempts to resist her.
“He’d never met anyone like me before. I trash talk, curse like a sailor, and pretty much say whatever’s on my mind. Life is too short to pretend to be something that you’re not.”
Rocky tries to keep his violent past hidden from Violet, but it suddenly catches up to him and he can no longer deny who he really is. Will Rocky turn his back on the life he built or stay and fight for what’s his? When Violet is faced with situations that rival anything she’s merely read about, will she be able to face her fears and work together with Rocky or will the truth tear them apart?
“It’s one hell of a wild ride! Take a look inside the first few pages and I’ll tell you all about it.”

Dottie’s Star Rating: 3.5 Stars

Review by Dottie

This book is kind of adorable. It’s got a quirky gal (written in the first person) and this particular gal has a talent for stumbling into situations that could sometimes lead to wonderful things – or sometimes – not so much.

As we meet her, she’s running an errand for her mom’s ex-boyfriend and she’s lamenting about how she’s not out on the town in a LBD and having fun with her girlfriends. Instead, she’s wandering into a small town, not too far from her house, and gets a bit turned around when trying to find her way home. So, when lost, what’s a girl to do? Well, being that she’s a woman, she stops to ask for directions of course! But in doing so, she stumbles into a small factory that doesn’t seem overly friendly to strangers; there’s a no trespassing sign prominently displayed at the door. But our quirky Violet completely disregards that sign and quickly realizes this is a small distillery. She admires it, finding all the copper pots and tanks and vats beautiful in an old-fashioned steam-punk kind of way. As she strolls in, she hopes someone will be able to direct her back onto the highway. What she got instead…well, let’s just say she wasn’t exactly welcomed with open arms…

“Who the fuck sent you here and what do you want?” Wow. Not the greeting I expected. At all. Who talks to a potential customer like that? Wait until the owner found out this guy was on the welcoming committee. “No one sent me here. I sort of took a wrong turn, got lost, and stumbled upon this place and I thought it looked cool with the name and all, and I wanted to see about possibly trying a sample (I’d never had gin before, so why not? They probably had free samples, right?) and maybe get directions to get unlost?” Did I mention that I get nervous easily when standing in the presence of violent looking people who could probably snap me in half like a twig? Hell, I get nervous speaking in front of large crowds, flying on planes, and pretty much doing anything not in my regular routine…Mr. Anti-Social marched over with an enormous scowl on his face, clearly NOT liking my answer to that question. “Are you from the Health Inspectors Office? Tell me your name and what you’re doing here NOW,” he demanded. “My name is Violet and I got lost. I can just turn around and leave and find directions elsewhere, but thank you for your time.” That was polite, right? Well Mr. Anti-Social was having none of that. “You will go nowhere until my questions are answered to my liking. And if I find out you’re not telling the truth, you WILL be held accountable, do you understand that?” Holy shit. What fucking rabbit hole did I stumble down and how the hell do I get out of here? What if this is some clandestine phony business front for a real drug den or prostitution ring? What if they’re killing people in that back room right now? What if I don’t make it out of this alive? This shit happens on TV, not in real life!…

Violet has stumbled into a world that is very new to her and yet, after relaxing and realizing these guys are okay, accepts a part-time position to help with the bookkeeping at this very distillery. That is where the fun begins.

She finds herself completely attracted to one of the owners of the place and yet, there are things off about Rocky that don’t exactly add up. Besides, he’s kinda her new boss which complicates matters.

“…Be ready on time, because I won’t be kept waiting.” Wait, what? How did I get invited to this? Why is he inviting ME? I stood looking at him dumbfounded as he said, “See you tonight,” and jumped off my porch to jog away. After staring at him with my mouth hanging open for what seemed like an hour but was probably only a few minutes, I shut the door and ran for the phone to call Stella [her best friend]. She answered groggily after the third ring. “What? Who is this? What’s the matter?” “Stella, it’s me. You will NOT believe what just happened. Rocky showed up on my front porch all hot and sweaty after a morning run and asked what there was to do around here. I told him about the taste of the town in Coral City and he said he’d pick me up tonight at five!” “Am I dreaming?” she asked, “or are you really waking me up on one of my only days to sleep late with some imaginary boy drama?” Stella was really not happy with anyone who interrupted her beauty sleep. “Stella, are you listening to me? Rocky. . .my front porch. . .seven in the morning on a Saturday. Do you think this is like a date?” I asked her in disbelief. “Let’s think about this. A guy is out on his morning run and he’s clearly spending time thinking about you or he wouldn’t have ended up at your front door. He claims to have been coincidentally in your neighborhood, asks you about your plans for the day, and then makes YOUR plans become HIS plans so he can ask you to join him. Sure as hell sounds like a date to me. Problems solved. Can I please try to go back to sleep now?”…”No, you can NOT go back to sleep, Stella. I need guidance. What do I even wear?” I asked her. “Clothes,” she replied, and then promptly hung up on me….

When I first saw this book’s cover, I saw it says very plainly that it is an “Alpha Male Mafia Comedy Romance.” I had actually never read a book about the mob that honestly made me laugh quite often until I read My Dirty Detour, but this one did. Between the quirkiness of Violet and the tough-on-the-outside but kind and sweet-on-the-inside Rocky, I enjoyed watching the sparks fly. It turns out, neither of them really were looking for a romantic entanglement but – there are times when you find love where you least expect it. Both Violet and Rocky quickly realize their attraction for what it is and they roll with it! It was pretty delightful to “see.” But with any book, things don’t always go smoothly or according to plan. This book is no exception to that rule!

There were also several secondary characters that I found interesting and often, amusing as well. The more Violet gets pulled into Rocky’s world, the more people whom live within his world come around and start interacting with her. Some of them adore her, others, well, they want to step on her and squish her like a bug. Her interaction with each of these characters was also fun to read about.

So why the 3.5 stars? Despite the fact that I really enjoyed the story, it took me a bit of time to really get into the book. I found the storyline to be cute but not as compelling as I had hoped for and it took me a while to read – in other words, it was very entertaining and enjoyable but it was not a book that I felt completely compelled to dive head-first into and to get lost within its pages. It was light-hearted and interesting, however, and I think it is a very unusual, yet refreshing, take on the organized crime type of book.

If you are looking for a book with a little bit of grit, and yet, not particularly dark that will amuse you and entertain you, this is a pretty good way to go!

Dottie’s Star Rating: 4 Stars

Review by Dottie

This is a classic example of the fact that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover…or its name! When I was asked to read and review this book by the author, the name of the book threw me off a bit. However, I read the synopsis and found myself intrigued. Once I began to read it, I found myself completely pulled into the story and found a delightful bit of a twist I didn’t see coming. And so I read on and once I finished the book, I found myself looking forward to reading more books in this series (although I believe, given the ending of this one, they will probably be stand-alones).

Dick has been a dick to many women, hopping in and out of their beds, never getting attached. He shows them a good time and then heads home, alone. He’s a successful entrepreneur and although he loves what he does, his business partner makes going into the office or business meetings a chore. He’s going through the motions of life with one exception – his kids.

This man completely adores his two kids he had with his ex-wife. He spends as much time as he can with them and although I honestly expected him to be a father who isn’t very involved in their lives, I am happy to say I was dead-wrong!

And our heroine, Eden, well she’s an elementary school (kindergarten) teacher at the same school where Dick’s kids attend. And Eden has heard all about Dick’s conquests – both with the mothers as well as their nannies. He has a very naughty reputation with the women around the school as a very talented partner, and of course, Eden has heard the stories too. But lucky girl, Dick’s son and Eden’s son suddenly develop into a solid friendship, basically forcing Dick and Eden to interact. Which would be fine except for the seriously huge sparks bouncing back and forth between the two of them (for those of you who have issues with cheating, I would still recommend this book, by the way).

But then Eden gets to see the part of him he doesn’t show anybody. She sees him being a dad, and this, for a woman married to a man who is as cold as a fish to not only her, but also to her son. It’s such a black and white difference, that Eden can’t help but see it and wish desperately that her son had the same. Not only does Dick turn out to be an amazing dad, when the chips are down and Eden needs a true friend, she is shocked to discover Dick steps into those shoes and is happy to be the one to do it…

“Eden, what’s going on?” He stalks toward us with a worried tone. When he takes in my cheek, his face scrunches and his jaw begins to tick. “What’s going on?” “I’m sorry to involve you. I didn’t know who else to ask. You know. . .someone that isn’t related or has ties to Blythe [her husband]. . .” I begin to explain. He pauses and his hand runs gently over my cheek. “We should get you ice,” he says then his attention switches to Grant [her son.] “Hey, buddy. How are you? I don’t have Jaden [his son] today. He’s getting dropped off with his sister tomorrow afternoon.” He crouches down to Grant’s level. Grant doesn’t answer. He tightens his hold on my leg. Dick remains at Grant’s level and looks back up at me. “Eden?” he asks questioningly. He can tell my son looks traumatized. I can’t hold on anymore. One stray tear falls down my cheek, followed by another, followed by a stream of tears I must have been holding on to. …”I’m sorry, I’m such a mess.” “Don’t apologize. I’m gathering you left. . .”…”Yes.” I smile through the tears. “It’s probably about time. You guys are not staying in a hotel. You are coming with me,” Dick says, still holding on to Grant…”Dick, wait. I can’t. . .I need to stay here. . .until my attorney works everything out,” I begin to explain, but he walks through the front doors and passes the valet his ticket. “Eden, I have three empty rooms in my house.”…”Dick, please, I have my car here. I can’t possibly stay with you,” I plead…”…”We’re friends, right?…so what’s the big deal?…”

Of course, what happens when you put two people together under one roof who are not only strongly attracted to one another, but also have reason to truly trust one another? Well, this is a romance novel, after all!

I honestly found myself loving this book! I found myself being pulled in to Eden’s world and found myself wanting to see her find happiness. I also found myself really liking Dick. He was like an onion; there were many, many layers to peel to get to the center but it was worth peeling them back to see the true man he was inside, the man he hid from most of the people in the world.

This is one of those books that knocked me off my feet in surprise, it was not the book I thought I was going to be reading and I admit it, I judged it by its cover and its name and I was very wrong to do so. I have read another book by this same author, Wild Cards, and gave that one 4.5 stars. R.C. Stephens is quickly becoming a new go-to author for me! Check it out!

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

Logan Francis Silverstone and I were complete opposites. I danced, and he stood still. He was quiet, while I ran my mouth. He struggled to find a smile, and I refused to frown.

The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn’t look away.

We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.

Until the day I lost him. He threw us away with one hasty decision–a decision that changed us forever.

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.

Dottie Star Rating: 5 Stars

Review by Dottie

Admittedly, I went into this book expecting great things. I absolutely ADORED the first book in this series, The Air He Breathes, so naturally, I thought I’d adore this one too. And I was right, I did.

This series is completely full of angst. But it’s angst at its finest – these books touch your heart deeply and pull at those heartstrings whilst in there! These books are stand-alones, however, so you wouldn’t necessarily need to read the first before the second – but then you’d be seriously missing out on one fine book! (See the link above for my review of that book if you’re curious about it.)

In the meantime, this book is a story of a second chance at first love, sigh. This theme is always one of my very favorites and this one didn’t let me down. I got pretty choked up with this one a couple of times and felt my eyes well up with tears. And if you’re asking yourself, “Now, self, why would I want to read a book that will possibly make me cry?” then the answer should be, “Because it’s absolutely lovely!” This is the type of book where I felt like the human spirit overcame so much adversity that it is like the sun shining through storm clouds so beautifully and brightly that my spirit felt like it was soaring. This author has become one of my automatic one-click authors because she seems to touch my heart in a way no one else does and I love that!

There are some parts of this story that are a bit predictable in the main characters – she’s a girl from “the right side of the tracks” and comes from a family with money. He’s a guy from the “wrong side of the tracks” and has zero money, like at all. And when they meet in high-school, one would think they had nothing in common. But they did. And it all started with a simple act of kindness…

…His face was beet red and his fingers were fidgety. As he stood in my checkout line at the grocery store. There was such a poignant embarrassment in his eyes as he swiped his food stamps card over and over again. Each time is was declined…”This is bullshit.” He huffed, his chest rising and falling. “We just got money on it yesterday.”…He took a breath, studied the line of people forming behind him, and then locked his stare with mine. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell.” “It’s okay,” I replied. “No, it’s not. I’m sorry. Can I just, leave the shit here for a second? I have to call my mom.”…When he turned back to me, I’d finished helping the last customer in my line. He shrugged his left shoulder and stepped closer, rubbing the back of his neck. “I don’t think I’m gonna be able to get those things today. Sorry. I can put the stuff back on the shelves. Sorry. Sorry.” He kept apologizing. My gut tightened. “It’s okay. Really. I’ll handle it. I’m getting off work now anyway. I’ll put it all back.” “Okay. Sorry.” I wished he’d stop apologizing, too. When he left, I glanced inside his grocery bags. Studying the items in the bags was heartbreaking. The stuff added up to a total of eleven dollars, and he couldn’t even afford that. Raman noodles, cereal, milk, peanut butter, and a loaf of bread – items I’d never had to think twice about buying. You never knew how good you had it until you saw how bad someone else did. “Hey!” I shouted, chasing after him in the parking lot. “Hey! You forgot these!” He turned slowly and narrowed his eyes in confusion. “Your bags,” I explained, handing the bags to him. “You forgot your bags.” “You could get fired.” “What?” “For stealing groceries,” he said. I hesitated for a moment, a bit confused as to why his first thought would be that I stole the food. “I didn’t steal them. I paid for them.” Bewilderment filled his stare. “Why would you do that? You don’t even know me.” “I know you’re trying to take care of your mom.”…He bit his bottom lip, and brushed his hand over his eyes. “I’ll pay you back. But. . .thank you…”…I met my best friend in the checkout lane of a grocery store. And my life was never the same again.

I loved both of these characters. I loved how they became best friends until they became something more, and then they became amazing. But one day, he made a snap decision shaped both of their lives, and not for the better. Now, here’s the thing – his decision made me a bit on the crazy side! I didn’t understand it. I still don’t understand it. If it wasn’t for the fact that this is a fictional character, I wouldn’t want to believe it. I get that it was a decision that pulled the storyline where the author wanted it to go, but I wanted to pull my hair out and scream, “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Sadly, because it’s fictional, this just couldn’t happen. In any case, I disagreed with his decision but I also understand this was a way for the plot to move in the direction the author envisioned. That does not mean, however, that I agreed with it – but then, if it were up to me, there would be times when I’d want to read a story without as much drama as a book such as this, but then I guess they’d be pretty unrealistic! All I can say about it is that made me want to reach into this book and slap them silly!

But in the meantime, this book affected me so much. The characters had so many adversities they had to deal with – but then this is what gave them the one thing they could build their relationship on. Neither of them had good parents – but they had each other and. As a result, they found their way together, as a team that seemed unstoppable. But nothing last forever. People must grow up. People’s circumstances change and sometimes once that happens, things are never the same and hearts can be broken…

…”I let you in,” he said, his voice harsh. My voice, was the complete opposite. Weak. Pained. Scared. “I know.” “I let you in, even though I told you it wasn’t a good thing. I’m not someone who loves, Alyssa. But you fucking made me love you.” “I know.” “So, you made me love you. And I loved you hard, because I didn’t know any other way. I loved you to my core, because you made this life seem a little bit more worth living. And then, out of nowhere, you turn on me. What did I do? Why would you. . .I told you my dreams. I told you everything.”….

See? Angst! But it was so well done that it made it absolutely worthy of reading. But this is the type of book that hurts your heart, but then it puts it back together in a way that makes it feel stronger at the end – does that make sense? Because when it’s good, it’s truly good…

“I could have a decent life with someone else,” I said. “I could have the white picket fence. The normal job, the normal kids, the normal husband. I could have a comfortable life with someone who I’d be content with, but never fully love. But that’s not what I want, Logan. I want you. I want the scars. I want the burns. I want your mess. Your scars, your burns, your mess – that’s my heart. You are everything I ever wanted and everything I’ll ever need. Your hurt is my hurt. Your strength is my strength. Your heartbeats flow through mine. So no, I’m not going to opt out. I don’t want to run because things are hard sometimes. I want you. All of you – the good, the bad, the pain, the anger. If you’re walking through hell, I’m holding your hand the whole way through….

The connection these two people had was one of those once-in-a-lifetime relationships that just doesn’t ever come along again. These two are truly soulmates – come along for the ride with their ups and downs, ins and outs; read this book – you’ll be very glad you did!
